My patio heater smells of gas.?

We have just bought a Jamie Durie patio heater but find the smell of gas is overpowering, all the connections are tight, the gas bottle is in good condition and it is outside. It does sit close to the patio roof however the rest of the patio is open, what do you think is the problem and what can i do to make it more usable?
